Can you make a shed liveable as a micro home?
I have seen many of them on the internet. Micro homes, mini homes, camping cabins, there
are many names for them, but in fact, they are a shed. Some are very nice sheds, but they
are basically a "shed". I have bought a 10 x 20 foot camping cabin shell w/loft bedroom. I plan
to use this as the start of my 200 sq. ft. home.
In looking, it seems that good use of space, is first concern. Liveability is a must have factor,
as this will be my home unto old age, (i'm 50 now) and wish it to be nice and comfortable then
also. So, if good use of livable space is the major concern, I can apply the things I learned
while living on a sailboat, that is less can be more, if most things have two uses. And my
personal favorite "If it is not a tool, or a safety item, and you haven't touched it in two weeks,
you probably dont really need it."
I now must look at what is important, and build accordinglly, within the confines of my
allowable 200 square feet.
Creature Comforts, what are they really?
When looking around your home, how much of the total space is used? If you are single, this is very easy to do, as only your possesions fill the space. How much space does your stuff really require? Are you renting more space than you really need, just to keep this pile of stuff? Most of us do and are doing this very thing. Face it, if you buy something, you have to have somewhere to put it down dont you?
Moving aboard a small sailboat taught me many things. When trying to stow things away for a long journey, I was faced between taking everything I thought I wanted, and saftey equipment that was vitally needed. This was the beginning of learning the difference about what I wanted, and what I truely needed.
I plan to apply these very lesons in building my cabin in the mountains, and a nice place it shall be..
My 10 foot by 20 foot prefab Camping Shed
This is my camping shed shell. It was built at a factory,
and will be delivered as
pictured to my lot.
I will then begin insulation and wall covering.
My hope is to use mostly reclaimed building materials
I will eventually turn my mini cabin
into a legal house,
with septic and electricity.

I like your idea about not needing so much stuff. Very good hub.
